Why Chickens? The Story Behind Our First Flock

In 2021, Johan and I moved from California to Illinois. We searched for the perfect property to call home, but the right fit just wasn’t available yet. Instead, we settled into a Dutch Colonial home on just under a ¼ acre — plenty of space for our two dogs. The yard even had a garden area with two large raised beds, which felt like the perfect start.

While I was still working in California, I often dreamed of coming home to a farm. Chickens had always been on my heart as the place to begin, so I knew that this backyard was just right to bring a few home.

In the spring of 2022, we brought home our first four chicks — including a very special silver-laced Wyandotte gifted to us by a friend. A month later, four more chicks joined the flock. Before we knew it, our guest bedroom was filled with nine fluffy little personalities.

Though I had been planning for chickens for some time, we hadn’t yet made the leap to build a coop. As the chicks grew in their brooder inside, work began outside. I have to give full credit to my dad for turning my sketches into reality. At the time, Johan and I were both busy with our careers, but on weekends we worked hard and finished the coop just in time for the chicks to move out.

Those chicks brought me so much joy in those early days — joy I desperately needed. In December of 2021, my mom passed away from Covid. Her loss took a huge toll on our family, and that winter was the coldest and most heartbreaking season I have ever known. But when spring came and the chicks arrived, I found myself smiling again. For the first time in months, I felt joy returning.

Our chickens continue to brighten my days with their curiosity, their silly antics, their cuddly moments, and their never-ending love for treats. There’s nothing quite like bringing home new baby chicks, but those first nine will always hold a special place in my heart. They were the first pieces of life and hope that helped fill the huge space left behind by the loss of my mom — my best friend.

So, why chickens? Yes, there are plenty of practical reasons: fresh eggs, pest control, even meat (though I’ll admit that part makes me cringe a little 😉). But I believe there’s something even greater they bring to the table: joy. And joy is just as essential as food.

So if you’re considering chickens, get them for the eggs, the garden, or simply for the laughter they bring. Because sometimes, joy really is reason enough.

Jenna
